What Is Organic Marketing? How Is It Different from SEO?

Chapter 1: Fundamentals Question 1 ⏱ About 1 minute

Chapter 1: Fundamentals · Question 1

I'm often asked: “Do you do SEO?“ I usually answer: “SEO is only part of what I do.”

Many people equate "organic marketing" with "SEO." But SEO is only a subset of organic marketing. Understand this relationship, and you won't bet all your effort on a single channel.

What is organic marketing

Organic marketing, in English, is called Organic Marketing. In one sentence:Get users to find you on their own, without spending on ads.

What specific methods does it include?

  • Search engine optimization (SEO): get web pages to rank high on Baidu and Google
  • AI search optimization (GEO/AEO): get your brand recommended in AI answers from Doubao, ChatGPT, and others
  • Content platform operations:Xiaohongshu (RED): organic traffic from Xiaohongshu posts, Zhihu answers, and Douyin videos
  • Social media operations:WeChat Official Accounts: reaching followers on WeChat and Weibo
  • Word of mouth and communities: user referrals, industry forums, open-source communities
  • Encyclopedia/knowledge graph presence:Baidu Baike: authoritative information sources such as Baidu Baike and Sogou Baike

Key point:Any traffic acquisition method that doesn't pay directly per click/impression/conversion counts as organic marketing.

Where SEO fits in organic marketing

SEO focuses on one thing: improving your ranking on search engine results pages. It is the most mature and most measurable branch of organic marketing.

But it has clear boundaries:

DimensionSEOOrganic marketing
Traffic sourceSearch engines (Baidu/Google/Bing)All organic reach channels
Core actionKeyword ranking optimizationContent production + distribution + brand building
Technical requirementsRelatively high (requires understanding of site structure and code)Varies by channel
Time to resultsTypically 3-6 monthsVaries by channel (short videos may be faster)
ControllabilityMedium (affected by algorithms)Scattered across multiple platforms, each with its own rules

Why you must move beyond pure SEO thinking today

Before 2020, “doing organic traffic was "basically equivalent to" doing SEO”. But the environment has completely changed:

1. Search entry points have fragmented

Users no longer rely only on Baidu. They search Xiaohongshu for shopping, Bilibili for technical learning, Dianping for restaurants, and ask AI directly for questions. If you only do Baidu SEO, you can only reach part of users' search behavior.

2. AI search is diverting traffic

AI assistants like Doubao, Kimi, and ChatGPT are increasingly replacing traditional search. They cite information sources directly to give answers—if your brand isn't in the AI's "knowledge base," users simply won't see you.

3. Content platforms have built-in search

Xiaohongshu's daily in-app search usage exceeds what many people imagine. Douyin search is also growing rapidly. These platforms' ranking rules are completely different from Baidu's.

The correct cognitive framework

Think of organic marketing as a tree:

              非付费营销
             / | \
          SEO GEO/AEO 平台运营
         / \ | / | \
百度 Google AI搜索 小红书 抖音 知乎

SEO is a thick branch, but not the whole tree.

My recommendation for prioritization is:

  • SEO is the foundation—the most stable, most predictable long-term traffic
  • AI search optimization is a new capability that must be added as soon as possible
  • Platform operations should be invested in selectively based on your industry and user habits

The three are not substitutes for each other, but complementary. A good piece of content can simultaneously serve Baidu rankings, be cited by AI, and spread on Xiaohongshu.

How to explain it to your boss

If you need to explain it to a boss without a technical background, you can say:

“SEO is about letting users find us when they search. Organic marketing is about letting usersanywhereactively find us—search engines, AI assistants, social media, industry platforms. SEO is the core battleground, but you can't defend only one battleground.”

Practical recommendations

  • Take stock of where your users search:B2C consumer goods, Xiaohongshu and Douyin search may be more important than Baidu; B2B technical products, Baidu SEO + Zhihu + AI search are the focus
  • First, get the SEO fundamentals right:website structure、Keywordlayout, content quality—these are the foundational capabilities for all channels
  • Check your own brand with AI search once a quarter:Use Doubao/Kimi to search your core keywords, see who the AI recommends, and whether you are in the answer
