Practical Value of Structured Data (Schema) in Chinese Search

Chapter 2: Search Fundamentals Question 29 ⏱ About 2 minutes

Chapter 2: Search Fundamentals · Question 29

Structured data is a way to "translate" your webpage content for search engines using a standardized format. You write articles in plain language, and search engines rely on structured data to precisely understand "this section is a Q&A," “this is a price”, “that is a step”. When done well, rich snippets may appear in your search results—rating stars,FAQexpandable content, breadcrumb navigation, etc., and CTR can improve significantly.

What is structured data?

Simply put, it means marking up key information on a webpage using the standard vocabulary of Schema.org in a format that search engines can understand (JSON-LD is recommended). For example:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Article",
  "headline": "结构化数据(Schema)在中文搜索的实战价值",
  "author": {"@type": "Person", "name": "VIP SEO"},
  "publisher": {"@type": "Organization", "name": "中文非付费营销100问"},
  "isPartOf": {"@type": "Book", "name": "中文非付费营销100问"}
}

When search engines see this code, they know this is an article, what the title is, who wrote it, and which series it belongs to. The code above is the structured data actually output by this page (slightly simplified).

Which Schema types does Baidu actually support?

Baidu's support for structured data is not entirely consistent with Google's. Below are the types that Baidu can currently actually recognize and that may trigger rich snippets:

Schema TypeBaidu Support LevelDisplay Effect
Article✓ SupportedPublish time and author information display
BreadcrumbList✓ SupportedSearch results show breadcrumb navigation path
FAQPage✓ Partially supportedQ&A content expands directly in search results
HowToNote: Limited supportStep-based content display
Product✓ SupportedPrice, rating, stock status
Organization✓ SupportedBrand logo, contact information
LocalBusiness✓ SupportedAddress, business hours, phone number

Note: Baidu also has its own structured data submission channel—"Baidu SearchResource Platform → Search Display → Structured Data." Some rich snippets (such as medical and education categories) need to be submitted through Baidu's own format.

Implementation: JSON-LD is the preferred method

Comparison of three markup methods:

  • JSON-LD(Recommended): written in<script>in tags, does not affect the page HTML structure, easy to maintain
  • Microdata: written in HTML tag attributes, highly coupled, difficult to maintain
  • RDFa: similar to Microdata, rarely used in China

For WordPress sites, it is recommended to install the Rank Math or Yoast SEO plugin to automatically generate JSON-LD code. For custom-built sites, developers embed it in the template.

Site practice: how the three JSON-LD types are deployed

This site ("100 Questions on Organic Marketing in Chinese" at songbing.com.cn) is a typical case of "custom template embedding"—written once in the Hugo template, automatically applied to all 100+ articles site-wide, with no need to hand-write each one. Currently three types are deployed, exactly matching the top three priorities suggested above:

TypeScopeSite approach
BreadcrumbListSite-wideAutomatically generates the "Home > 100 Questions > Article Title" path
Article + BookEach Q&A pageheadline / author / publisher auto-filled, with isPartOf marking it as belonging to the "100 Questions" book
FAQPageEach Q&A pageUses the title as Question and the body as Answer, making it easy for AI / search to cite

Taking this article's page as an example, the JSON-LD actually output by BreadcrumbList looks like this:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "BreadcrumbList",
  "itemListElement": [
    {"@type": "ListItem", "position": 1, "name": "首页", "item": "https://www.songbing.com.cn/"},
    {"@type": "ListItem", "position": 2, "name": "100问", "item": "https://www.songbing.com.cn/100wen/"},
    {"@type": "ListItem", "position": 3, "name": "结构化数据(Schema)在中文搜索的实战价值", "item": "https://www.songbing.com.cn/100wen/schema-structured-data/"}
  ]
}

The site's trade-off is simple:Only do the three things most essential for an article site, and skip types like Product and HowTo that are irrelevant to a content site—this itself is the practical implementation of "don't over-mark up." You can directly use "right-click View Source → search ld+json" to see the real output of any page on this site.

Real impact on CTR

Based on tracking data from multiple SEO cases in China (the following uplift ranges are industry experience ranges, not official statistics):

  • After breadcrumb navigation appears, CTR increases by an average of 10-15%
  • FAQ rich snippets make search results occupy more space, increasing CTR by 20-35%
  • Product Rich Snippets (with ratings and prices) increase CTR by 15-25%

A knowledge site, after addingFAQPagestructured data to 200 articles, saw the Baidu CTR of related pages rise from 3.2% to 4.8% within three months, with traffic growing 50% while rankings stayed unchanged (the above is case data from that knowledge site, not an industry average).

Testing and validation tools

  • Google Rich Results Test: the most authoritative structured data testing tool; although it's Google's, the Schema standard is universal
  • Schema Markup Validator: the official schema.org validator
  • Baidu Site Owner Platform → Data Monitoring → Structured Data: check Baidu's actual crawling and usage
  • Browser extensions: such as "Structured Data Testing Tool" for quickly viewing the Schema markup of any page

Implementation priority recommendations

If your time is limited, add them in this order:

  1. BreadcrumbList: Simplest to implement, with immediate results
  2. Article/NewsArticle: A must-do for content sites
  3. FAQPage: Prioritize pages with Q&A content
  4. Product: A must-do for e-commerce sites
  5. Organization: Add once to the homepage is enough

Practical recommendations

  • Don't over-mark up: Only mark up content that actually exists on the page; false information (such as fake ratings) will be penalized by Baidu
  • Do BreadcrumbList and Article first: These two have the lowest implementation cost and the best Baidu support, making them the most cost-effective starting point
  • Regularly check the structured data report in Baidu Search Resource Platform: Confirm that Baidu has successfully recognized the data you submitted, and fix errors promptly when found

Solve it with AI tools: structured data generation and validation

Scenario 1: Automatically generate JSON-LD from body text

Paste the content of one of your articles to the AI:

I have a webpage's content (paste the body text, title, author, and publish time). Please help me generate Schema.org-compliant JSON-LD structured data, including the Article type, and supplement breadcrumb, author, and publisher information. Requirements: use JSON-LD format, complete fields, and use the canonical URLs I provide for URLs.

The AI can automatically complete the JSON-LD based on the fields you provide, which is much faster than writing it by hand.

Scenario 2: Batch-generate FAQPage structured data

I have compiled a batch of Q&A pairs (paste the Q/A list). Please help me generate FAQPage-type JSON-LD structured data in the format of a mainEntity array, with one Question/Answer object per Q&A pair. Use the original text I provide for the answers; do not rewrite them.

Scenario 3: Validate and fix structured data with errors

This is the error information detected by the structured data testing tool (paste the error details). Please help me explain the meaning and impact of each error, and provide the corrected complete JSON-LD code.

Scenario 4: Choose the appropriate Schema type

My page type is [product page/article page/Q&A page/service page/company homepage], and the page contains [what information, such as price/FAQ/rating/contact details]. Please tell me: which Schema.org types should I use? Which ones have actual effect on Baidu? Give a priority ranking and example code.

Note: the boundaries of AI

  • AI-generated output must be validated against standards: AI-generated JSON-LD must be run through the Rich Results Test or a Schema validator; syntax errors and missing fields must be corrected before going live
  • Don't let AI fabricate information: Structured data must reflect content that actually exists on the page; the AI may "fabricate" ratings, authors, or dates to complete fields, and false markup will be penalized by search engines
  • Baidu ≠ Google: The Schema suggestions given by AI may lean toward the Google ecosystem; marking up types that Baidu does not support is pointless, so refer to the Baidu support table on this page

Supplement: non-technical people can do it too—“ "generates structured data" like filling out a form

No coding required—just have AI help you "fill in the blanks”":

Please convert this product information into JSON-LD structured data: [paste product description: name, price, specifications, FAQ, reviews, etc.]. It must comply with the Schema.org Product / FAQPage specifications.

Paste the AI-generated code into your website backend. Structured data is the GEO "skeleton"—using code to tell AI "this is the price"“"this is a review"“"these are the solution steps"”, so AI engines can directly extract your product specifications and authoritative reviews instead of just guessing.
