Content Refresh: How to Update Old Content

Chapter 4: Content Marketing Question 60 ⏱ About 1 minute

Chapter 4: Content Marketing · Question 60

There are always some "once glorious" articles on a website—they got decent traffic when published, but gradually declined over time. Many people's first instinct is to keep writing new articles, but in factthe ROI of refreshing old content is often 3-5 times that of writing new articles(industry rule-of-thumb estimate, not precise statistics). Because old pages already have authority, backlinks, and historical data—a "refresh" is all it takes to reactivate rankings.

Refresh, rewrite, or delete?

Not all old content is worth refreshing—assess first:

SituationRecommended actionCriteria
Ranking dropped but still in top 3 pagesRefreshHas a foundation; an update can restore it
Topic still has search volume but article quality is poorRewriteKeep the URL, replace all content
Topic has no search volume / is outdatedDelete or merge301 to a related page
Has backlinks but content is outdatedRefreshBacklink value must not be wasted
Multiple articles overlap on the same topicMergePick the strongest one, 301 the rest to it

Full Content Refresh workflow

Step 1: Audit—find content that needs refreshing

Identify declining content from Google Search Console / Baidu Analytics:

  • Compare the past 3 months vs the same period a year earlier, and find pages with traffic drops > 20%
  • Check "Keywordrankings" changes in Baidu Search Resource Platform and find articles that dropped from page 1 to pages 2-3
  • Pay special attention to pages that "used to be in the top 5 and now sit at positions 8-15"—these are the easiest to recover

Quick screening formula:

Priority = historical peak traffic × likelihood of current ranking recovery ÷ workload required for the refresh

Step 2: Analyze—why did the ranking drop?

Common causes of decline and corresponding actions:

CauseSymptomAction
Outdated informationData is from 2 years ago, tools are no longer availableUpdate data and examples
Increased competitionA new competitor published a more comprehensive articleExpand content and add depth
Change in search intentThe ranking keywords have changedRe-analyze the SERP and adjust content direction
Poor user experienceHigh bounce rate, short dwell timeImprove layout, add charts, optimize structure
Loss of internal link equityInternal links point to deleted pagesAdd new internal link entry points

Step 3: Execute the refresh

A standardized refresh action checklist:

  1. Update data and statistics: Replace "2022 data shows…“ with the latest data
  2. Add new case studies: Add recent success stories or industry changes
  3. Expand missing sections: See which subtopics your competitors' ranking pages cover that you haven't written about
  4. Optimize keywords: Use 5118 or Baidu Keyword Tool to find newly added related search terms and work them in naturally
  5. Improve readability: Add a table of contents, add tables, add images, break into smaller sections
  6. AddInternal links: Link to this old article from recently published new articles
  7. Update the date: Change "last updated on ” (only change it if there is a substantive content change)
  8. Resubmit for indexing: Manually submit the updated URL on the Baidu Webmaster Platform

Step 4: Monitor recovery

  • It usually takes 1-4 weeks to see results after submission
  • Use the Baidu Webmaster Platform to track ranking and click changes for that URL
  • If there is no improvement after 4 weeks, consider whether a more substantial rewrite is needed

Case study: one refresh brought a 3x traffic recovery

A SaaS company blog's "project management tool comparison" article:

  • Before the refresh: Published in 2022, ranking dropped from #2 to #14, monthly traffic fell from 3,000 to 400
  • Refresh actions: Updated the latest pricing and features for 5 tools, added 2 new 2024 tools, added a comparison table and selection recommendations, added screenshots of user reviews
  • 3 weeks after the refresh: Ranking recovered to #3, monthly traffic rebounded to 2,800
  • Time invested: About 4 hours (vs 8-12 hours to write a new article; the above is case data from this SaaS company, not an industry average)

Build a regular refresh mechanism

Don't wait until content declines to think about refreshing it; we recommend building a routine mechanism:

  • Monthly: Check ranking changes for your Top 20 traffic pages
  • Quarterly: Do a round of updates for all articles containing "years/data"
  • Every six months: Do a full audit of all site content

Practical recommendations

  • Do one thing this week: Open Baidu Analytics, find the 5 articles with the biggest traffic decline, and prioritize refreshing the ones still ranking in the top 20—this is the fastest-acting SEO action
  • Keep the original URL unchanged when refreshing: Never delete an old article and create a new one, as this will lose all accumulated authority and backlinks
  • Add an "update log" at the end of the article: Record a summary of each update (e.g., "August 2024: Updated pricing data and added new tool comparisons"), which both increases trust and adds content length
