What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)? How Can Brands Get Recommended by AI?
Chapter 1: Awareness · Question 5
In the previous article we discussed GEO; this one covers its sibling concept—AEO.
Let's start with the conclusion:AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the optimization strategy that makes your brand "understood, remembered, and recommended" by AI assistants. A user asks Doubao a question, and the AI mentions you in its answer—that is the effect of AEO.
Put simply, SEO competes for a spot in the top 10 search results; AEO competes for the AI's "single recommended answer." The competition is fiercer, but the reward for winning is greater.
SEO vs AEO: The Differences in One Table
| Dimension | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Optimization target | Search engines such as Baidu and Google | AI assistants such as Doubao, Kimi, and ChatGPT |
| Presentation | Gives you a list of links to choose from | Gives the answer directly, citing information sources |
| Ranking logic | Keyword matching + backlink authority | Semantic understanding + information credibility |
| User behavior | Input keywords, browse multiple pages | Ask in natural language, expect a direct answer |
| Competitive focus | Compete for the top 10 | Compete for the "single answer" |
Why would AI recommend you instead of others?
From my observations, AI follows these principles when generating answers:
- Information authority—Is the source an industry-recognized professional platform or the brand's official channel?
- Structured content—Is the information clear and well-organized, making it easy for AI to extract key points?
- Semantic completeness—Does the content fully answer a question rather than being fragmented?
- Multi-source consistency——Whether multiple platforms give consistent evaluations of your brand
- Timeliness——Whether the content is fresh enough
Key point:AI cross-verifies. It's no use saying you're good on one platform; multiple platforms need to say you're good.
Here's a real scenario in the China market
A user asks Doubao: “What complementary food tools are good for a 6-month-old baby?”
AI synthesizes Xiaohongshu reviews, Zhihu Q&A, and JD reviews to generate an answer. If a brand has structured, high-quality content in all these places:
- There are lots of "complementary food tool review" posts on Xiaohongshu mentioning it
- There are professional answers on Zhihu analyzing its product advantages
- There is a clear product spec page on an encyclopedia or the official website
Then the probability of this brand being recommended by AI rises greatly. Conversely, if you only praise yourself on your own official website, AI simply won't believe it.
AEO web code optimization: making it easier for AI to "read" you
What was discussed earlier is content strategy; this section iscode-levelimplementation—when AI crawls your page, can it easily identify "this is a heading, this is an answer, this is a question"? If the code is written in a friendly way, the probability of AI citing you is higher. The following 6 items are a code optimization checklist ranked by cost-effectiveness.
1. Semantic HTML structure
AI relies on HTML tags to understand page semantics; don't use <div> for everything:
| Should use | instead of | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
<h1> / <h2> / <h3> | Using large fonts to impersonate headings | AI identifies content hierarchy |
<p> | Use <div> to hold body text | AI identifies paragraphs |
<ul> / <ol> | Manually indenting lists | AI identifies key points |
<table> | Tables in image form | AI extracts comparison data |
<strong> / <em> | Using color and bold text | AI identifies emphasis |
Key points: one page per topic <h1>, use the following for Q&A titles: <h2>, use the following for subsections under each Q&A: <h3>, and do not skip heading levels (jumping straight from h1 to h3 causes confusion). When AI reads a clear heading hierarchy, it knows how many questions this page covers and what each one is.
2. Mark up Q&A with FAQ semantic tags / structured data
If your page is in a "question and answer" format,make it explicit to AI that this is Q&A, rather than leaving it to guess:
<div itemscope itemtype="https://schema.org/FAQPage">
<div itemscope itemprop="mainEntity" itemtype="https://schema.org/Question">
<h2 itemprop="name">6个月宝宝用什么辅食工具好?</h2>
<div itemprop="acceptedAnswer" itemscope itemtype="https://schema.org/Answer">
<p itemprop="text">优先选不含 BPA、易清洗、防滑底的辅食工具……</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
It is more recommended to use JSON-LD(does not affect the visible page content, and is recognized by both search engines and AI):
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [
{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "6个月宝宝用什么辅食工具好?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "优先选不含 BPA、易清洗、防滑底的辅食工具……"
}
}
]
}
</script>
Note: the FAQ answer text must match what users can see on the page; you cannot "hide answers", or it will be judged as cheating.
3. Ensure "crawlability" — don't let AI miss the content
Most AI crawlers can execute JavaScript, but risks remain, especially in the following cases:
- Content is rendered entirely by JS: if the answer is written into the page by JS only after the browser loads, some crawlers may not capture it. Prefer server-side rendering (SSR) or have the full text present in the HTML source
- Blocked by robots.txt blocking: confirm that
robots.txtis not mistakenly blocking AI crawlers (Baiduspider、GPTBot、Google-Extendedetc.) - Content is hidden in JS interactions: answers that only appear on click or hover cannot be seen by AI; put them into the page's static text
- Excessive lazy loading: too much lazy loading of images/text; ensure key content is visible by default
Self-check method: use the browser's "View page source" (Ctrl+U) to check whether your core answer text is directly in the source, not only in the rendered DOM.
4. Give each question a "clean, stable URL"
AI includes the source link when citing, and a stable URL is a prerequisite for it to be willing to cite:
- Each question/answer corresponds toan independent, semanticURL (e.g.,
/faq/baby-food-tools/), avoid addresses with long strings of parameters - Do not change the URL frequently; if changed, use 301 to the new address
- Do not have multiple URLs for the same question (avoid AI not knowing which one to cite)
5. Structured data testing and performance
- TestingStructured data: Use Google Rich Results Test or the schema.org validator to check whether JSON-LD is valid; errors will reduce the probability of being recognized
- Pages should not be too slow: AI crawlers have crawling time and quotas; slow page loading reduces the probability of complete crawling, so compress images and streamline code
- Keep pages clean: Pop-ups, full-screen ads, and ads embedded in the body text will all "distract" AI when extracting the main content; keep the core answer area clean
6. Use rel="nofollow" to manage external links
When AI crawls, it also incorporates the links on the page into its understanding. Add rel="nofollow"to low-quality or irrelevant external links, and keep normal links to high-value sources (official documentation, authoritative reports). This helps AI judge that your page "cites reliable information" rather than "links everywhere randomly."
How should brands lay out AEO? Three steps
Step 1: Build content that "can be crawled by AI"
- Create or improve brand entries on Baidu Baike/Sogou Baike
- Use FAQ format (Q&A style) for official website content to facilitate AI extraction
- Publish in-depth content on Zhihu and Xiaohongshu to cover common user questions
Step 2: Ensure multi-platform information consistency
If you say "industry No. 1" on Douyin but cannot find support on other platforms, AI will simply ignore it. Keep core information expressed consistently across platforms.
Step 3: Write content around "conversational questions"
No longer focus only onKeyword, but organize content around the complete questions users may ask AI:
- ✗ Traditional approach: title says "XX brand baby food processor"
- ✓ AEO approach: title says "How to choose the first baby food processor for a 6-month-old baby?"
Advanced: AEO from an investment management perspective—from "buying positions" to "buying out questions"
Traditional search advertising is "buying positions" (bidding for rankings), while the core of AEO is **“buying out questions”**—building a dynamic "answer library" so that when users ask questions on various platforms, the system retrieves your standard response. The 5 types of "answer words" with the highest conversion rates (taking the smart home appliance industry as an example):
| Answer word type | Examples of real user questions | Optimization goal |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase decision keyword | “For a xx sqm home, which robot vacuum is the most cost-effective choice?” | Become the top AI recommendation |
| Spec comparison keyword | “What is the difference between Brand A model and model B?” | Create intuitive comparison tables to prevent user churn |
| Pain point and pitfall keyword | “Is the xx product really good? Will it leak water or tangle hair?” | Respond directly in an official capacity to eliminate decision concerns |
| Installation/troubleshooting keyword | “How do I reset the filter indicator on the xx water purifier when it shows red?” | Provide step-by-step answers to build brand goodwill |
| Scenario fit keyword | “I have a cat at home—how do I choose a vacuum with strong suction that isn't noisy?” | Get cited by AI in vertical niche scenarios |
Budget recommendation: reduce the existing feed ads budget and shift it into "AEO knowledge asset building."

Practical recommendations
- Do it today: Search your brand name and core category keywords on Doubao/Kimi to see how AI currently introduces you—this is your AEO baseline
- Content overhaul: Rewrite your website's core content into a "question-and-answer" format, with each piece focused on answering one high-frequency user question
- Multi-source layout: Ensure brand information covers at least 3 high-authority platforms (encyclopedias, Zhihu, Xiaohongshu) to form an information network that AI can cross-verify
