What Is Search Intent? Why Is It More Important Than Keywords?
Chapter 2: Search Fundamentals · Question 23
The biggest pitfall in SEO isfocusing only onKeyword, and ignoring the intent behind them. When a user types in a word, do they want to "learn something"“buy something" or "go somewhere”? Figuring this out is more useful than stuffing in ten keywords.
What Is Search Intent?
Search intent refers to theactual goal the user wants to achievewhen they enter a query into the search box. The same keyword can mean completely different things to different people in different scenarios.
The core task of a search engine is not to match keywords, but tounderstand and satisfy user intent. Baidu and Google are both evolving in this direction—the results they display are a "vote" on intent.
Four Types of Search Intent
| Intent Type | User Goal | Chinese Search Example | SERP Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Informational | Learn about or understand a topic | “how air conditioners work” | Encyclopedias, long-form articles, videos, Zhihu answers |
| Navigational | Find a specific website/brand | “Gree official website"“JD” | Brand official site ranks first, with sitelinks |
| Commercial Investigation | Compare and review, preparing to buy | “which air conditioner brand is best” | Comparison articles, reviews, Q&A, rankings |
| Transactional | Direct purchase or action | “Gree air conditioner KFR-35GW price” | E-commerce links, price information, buy buttons |
How to determine the search intent of a keyword?
The simplest method: search it on Baidu and see what it displays.
The type of results Baidu displays = the user intent Baidu perceives. This is called "SERP reverse analysis”:
- Search "air conditioner" → JD.com, Tmall, Gree official site appear → Baidu considers thisnavigational/transactional intent
- Search "which air conditioner brand is best" → appearsZhihuanswers, review articles → Baidu considers thiscommercial investigation intent
- Search "how air conditioners work" → appearsBaidu Baike, popular science videos → Baidu considers thisinformational intent
- Search "Gree air conditioner 1.5 HP price" → e-commerce product pages appear → Baidu considers thistransactional intent
How to use AI tools for search intent analysis
“SERP reverse analysis" is very effective, but searching dozens or hundreds of keywords one by one and digging through results is too slow. You can use AI tools to semi-automate this method (for the tool list, seeAI tool list). Below, let's use this series "100 Questions on Chinese Organic Marketing" itself as an example.
Using workbuddy: batch-run the "intent classification" workflow
workbuddy is suited foritem-by-item judgment + batch output. For these 100 questions, each title is itself a core keyword—“how to calculate the ROI of organic traffic"“what is GEO"“should going global do AEO, GEO”... searching Baidu SERPs one by one is too slow, so hand it to workbuddy for batch preliminary screening:
Operation example:
- Export the 100 question titles (or their corresponding core keywords) into a table and feed it to workbuddy.
- Give it a prompt: determine the dominant search intent of each question (informational / navigational / commercial investigation / transactional), and provide the basis for judgment + recommended content format.
- Let it run through the batch and output a table with "intent labels".
Example prompt:
Below is the question list of "100 Questions on Chinese Organic Marketing". Please determine the dominant search intent of each question (informational / navigational / commercial investigation / transactional), provide the basis for judgment, and recommend the corresponding content format. Question list: ...
For example, it will give:“What is GEO?" → informational, the user wants to understand the concept; it is recommended to write a concept explainer + extended comparison;“Should overseas expansion do AEO and GEO?" → commercial investigation, the user is making a decision; it is recommended to write content with clear conclusions and priorities. Previously, manually reviewing the SERP for 100 keywords took a whole day; now initial screening can be completed in just over ten minutes.
Use Amazon Quick: summarize intent distribution, discover intent drift
workbuddy excels at "judging item by item”, while Amazon Quick excels at "seeing the whole picture”. Import the intent table output by workbuddy, or your existing keywords + traffic data, into Amazon Quick, and ask it a few questions:
- “Among these 100 questions, what proportion does each of the four intents account for?”
- “Which questions have changed intent in recent months (for example, shifting from informational to commercial investigation)?”
- “Which of my site pages have a mismatch between page format and question intent?”
Operation example: Import the intent annotations of the 100 questions into Amazon Quick. After summarizing, it was found that—“informational accounts for more than half, but’Is XX worth doing’‘Which XX is better’—such commercial investigation questions are relatively few, and these are exactly the topics closer to conversion”. This conclusion determines which type of content to supplement next.
How the two work together
| Stage | Tool | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Judge item by item | workbuddy | Batch-judge the intent of each question + recommend content formats |
| Summarize the whole | Amazon Quick | Summarize intent distribution, discover mismatches and intent drift |
A complete pipeline:Question title table → workbuddy batch-judges intent → Amazon Quick summarizes distribution and finds mismatches → feeds back into topic planning。
Note: AI intent judgment is initial screening; manual spot-checking is required in the end, especially for navigational and transactional terms that AI easily misjudges—if AI judgment does not match the actual SERP, the actual SERP prevails.
Why is intent more important than keywords?
1. If the intent is wrong, high rankings are useless
If a user searches "which air conditioner brand is good”, they want to see comparison reviews. Your page is a product detail page; even if it contains this keyword, users will bounce instantly—and a high bounce rate in turn lowers your ranking.
2. Baidu's algorithm increasingly "understands intent”
Baidu's ERNIE large model has greatly improved search engines' semantic understanding. It no longer simply matches literal words, but understands "what type of content the user actually wants”.
3. Intent determines content format
| Intent Type | Suitable content format |
|---|---|
| Informational | In-depth long articles, tutorials, video explanations |
| Navigational | Brand homepage, product landing page |
| Commercial investigation | Comparison tables, rankings, real reviews |
| Transactional | Product page, price page, purchase guide page |
Case study: a single word's intent can change
The term “Double 11⟦P1P⟧:
- Searched in October: informational (“When does Double 11 start“What discounts are available”)
- Searched on November 10: transactional (“Double 11 venue entry“flash sale link”)
- Searched on November 12: informational (“Double 11 sales figures“performance report”)
So when planning content, considerthe impact of the time dimension on intent。
Practical recommendations
- Add an "intent" column to your keyword planning: in your keyword spreadsheet, label each term with which of the four intents it belongs to, then make sure the page type you create matches the intent
- Use the SERP to validate your judgment: search the target term before writing content. If the top 10 Baidu results are all long-form reviews, you shouldn't write a 500-word short page; if they're all product pages, you shouldn't write an explainer article
- One page serves only one primary intent: don't try to both teach "how an air conditioner works" and sell air conditioners on the same page—users and search engines will both be confused
- Hand intent classification to AI for semi-automation: once you have many keywords, manually checking SERPs isn't realistic. Use workbuddy to batch-run intent classification and Amazon Quick to summarize mismatches, with humans only doing sample reviews
