Competitor Content Analysis: How to Find Content Gaps?

Chapter 4: Content Marketing Question 69 ⏱ About 1 minute

Chapter 4: Content Marketing · Question 69

You've been heads-down writing content, but traffic growth is slow. Your competitors' content quality is clearly about the same as yours, so why is their search traffic three times yours?

The answer is likely: they cover topics you haven't covered.Keywordand topics. This gap is the Content Gap。

What is Content Gap analysis?

Simply put, it means identifyingthe keywords and topics that competitors rank for but you have no content covering。

The core questions it answers are:

 • What are users searching for that competitors provide answers to, but I don't?
 • Which topics should I write about but haven't yet?
 • Which keywords have I had a chance to capture but overlooked?

This isn't about copying competitors—it's aboutdiscovering the parts of market demand you've missed。

Complete Content Gap analysis in four steps

Step 1: Identify 3-5 core competitors

Selection criteria:

 • Brands competing for the same target customers as you
 • Websites competing for the same keywords as you on search engines
 • Peers doing content marketing well (not necessarily direct business competitors)

Tip: Search your core keywords on Baidu—the domains that repeatedly appear on the first two pages are your SEO competitors.

Step 2: Export competitors' ranking keywords

Use tools to get all the keywords your competitors' websites currently rank for:

Step 3: Compare to identify gaps

Cross-compare competitor keywords with the keywords of your existing content:

Using songbing.com.cn's "organic marketing" topic Gap analysis as an example:

竞品 A 排名词:{什么是GEO, GEO和SEO区别, 怎么让AI推荐品牌, 小红书SEO, 新闻稿营销}
竞品 B 排名词:{什么是GEO, AI搜索优化, 网站结构设计, 关键词研究, 内容去重}
songbing 已有:{什么是GEO, 网站结构设计, 关键词研究}

Content Gap = {GEO和SEO区别, 怎么让AI推荐品牌, 小红书SEO, 新闻稿营销, AI搜索优化, 内容去重}

Key focus areas:Keywords where multiple competitors rank but you have no content at all— This shows demand genuinely exists and you are missing out on traffic. songbing.com.cn turned gaps like "how to get AI to recommend my brand" “ content deduplication into get-ai-to-recommend-your-brand/、canonical-tag-deduplication/ and other real Q&A pages.

Step 4: Prioritize

Not all gaps are worth filling. Score them using the following framework:

DimensionAuthorityEvaluation method
Search volume30%Average monthly search volume (5118/Baidu Index)
Competition difficulty30%Authority of currently ranking pages
Commercial Value40%Whether it is directly relevant to your product/service

Note: The weights of the three dimensions above are an experience-based scoring framework, not a standard model.

Prioritize: Keywords with medium search volume + low difficulty + high commercial value
Defer for now: Keywords with extremely high search volume but fierce competition, or unrelated to your business

Turn gaps into a content calendar

After finding gaps, the next step is to turn them into an actionable content plan:

 1. Cluster— Group similar keywords into the same Topic Cluster
 2. Set format— Determine what content format suits the topic (tutorial? comparison review? case study? tool recommendation?)
 3. Schedule— Arrange into a monthly/quarterly content calendar by priority
 4. Set standards——Define the target keyword, word count, and publishing platform for each piece of content

Common pitfalls

 • ✗ Looking only at search volume and ignoring commercial intent—high-traffic keywords don't necessarily bring conversions
 • ✗ Trying to fill all gaps at once—focus on the 20% high-value gaps
 • ✗ Doing the analysis only once—Content Gap is dynamic; update it quarterly
 • ✗ Copying competitor content—the goal is to cover the same topics but provide better answers

Practical recommendations

 • Do this week: Use 5118 to export the ranking keywords of you and your main competitors, and identify the Top 20 high-value keywords they have that you don't—this is your content topic source for next month
 • Build a competitor monitoring mechanism: Each month, use tools to capture competitors' newly ranking keywords, spot their new content moves immediately, and follow up quickly
 • Gap analysis goes beyond SEO: The same logic can be applied toXiaohongshu (RED)(look at competitors' viral post topics),Zhihu(look at competitors' highly upvoted answer topics), and other platforms
