How big is the impact of Baidu AI summaries on organic rankings?

Chapter 1: Fundamentals · Question 7

What is a Baidu AI summary?

I first noticed this feature while preparing a monthly report for a client—a page that had been stably in the top position suddenly saw its CTR drop by 40%. The ranking hadn't changed, but traffic was cut in half. After investigating, I discovered that Baidu had added an AI-generated summary at the top of the search results.

Baidu AI summary (also called "minimalist summary") is a feature Baidu Search began rolling out gradually starting in 2024: when a user searches a question, the top of the search results page directly displays an AI-generated answer with links to reference sources.

Simply put:Before the user clicks into any webpage, the answer is already right in front of them.

This is essentially the same as Google's AI Overview—search engines are transforming from "indexing tools" into "answer engines."

How big is the impact on organic rankings?

Core impact: organic results are "pushed below the first screen"

MetricTraditional searchWith AI summary
Position of first organic resultVisible on first screenPushed to second screen
CTR of first organic result (estimated)28-35%Drops to 12-18%
User "zero-click" rate~45%May rise to 60%+

Simply put, if your page was originally in the first position of search results, 30 out of every 100 search users would click through. But with AI summaries, perhaps only 15 people click—traffic is cut in half。

More critically, these lost users aren't going to competitor websites—they're getting a "sufficient" answer right on the search results page and not clicking any webpage at all. For websites that depend on search traffic, this is a structural challenge.

Note: The CTR, zero-click rate, and other data in the table above areindustry estimates, extrapolated from trends in third-party research on overseas AI Overview (Google). Baidu has not published specific data, but the direction is consistent.

Which queries are likely to trigger AI summaries?

  1. Definition-type questions: “What is private domain traffic”
  2. Step-by-step operation type: “how to register as a sole proprietor”
  3. Comparison type: “React vs Vue, which is better”
  4. Data query type: “China GDP growth rate 2025”

Impact differences across industries

  • Knowledge encyclopedia sites(encyclopedias, Q&A communities): biggest impact, large volumes of "what is" traffic intercepted
  • Tool sites(online calculators, format converters): smaller impact, AI summaries cannot replace functionality
  • E-commerce sites: moderate impact, product searches currently trigger fewer summaries, but the trend is expanding
  • Local service sites: minimal impact, heavily reliant on maps and real-time information

How to respond?

Strategy 1: Strive to become a "cited source" for AI summaries

Baidu AI summaries label their reference sources. If your page is cited, brand exposure persists even without clicks; and while citation link CTR is low, trust is high.

Optimization directions:

  • Structure page content (use clear H2/H3 headings, lists, tables)
  • Answer questions directly (give a concise answer in the first paragraph)
  • Build authority (E-E-A-T signals)

Strategy 2: Target needs AI summaries cannot cover

  • In-depth reviews, personal experience, subjective recommendations
  • Scenarios requiring interaction (calculators, tools, evaluations)
  • Long-tail, combined queries

Strategy 3: Shift from "getting clicks" to "getting cited"

New measurement approach: how many times has your content been cited by AI systems? This is a new KPI SEO needs to add after 2026.

Practical recommendations

  • Regularly check whether coreKeywordis already covered by AI summaries: search manually or monitor with tools; if a summary is already triggered, adjust content strategy to get cited rather than purely ranked.
  • Make content format "AI-friendly": Open the article with one or two sentences that answer the question directly, making it easy for AI to extract; at the same time, keep the body in-depth to give users a reason to click through.
  • Diversify traffic sources: Don't put all your chips on Baidu organic search;Xiaohongshu (RED)、Zhihu、WeChat Searchare all channels for acquiring organic traffic.
