Complete process of keyword research (from needs to implementation)

Chapter 2: Search Fundamentals · Question 20

Keyword research is not about 'brainstorming a few words'—it's a systematic workflow that starts with business needs, validates with data, and ultimately delivers a content plan. Doing keyword research well is like drawing the roadmap for your entire SEO strategy.

Why is keyword research the starting point of SEO?

  • It determines what content you should create
  • It determines who your content can reach
  • It determines how high your organic traffic ceiling can be

Starting content creation without keyword research is like setting off without a map—you might travel far, but in the wrong direction.

Complete process: 6 steps

Step 1: Clarify business goals and user personas

Before opening any tool, answer these questions:

  1. What problem does my product/service solve?
  2. Who is my target audience? How do they describe their needs?
  3. What do users search for before purchasing/deciding?
  4. What do I want to achieve through search traffic? (Lead generation, brand exposure, market education?)

Step 2: Build a seed keyword library

Collect initial keywords from the following sources:

SourceMethod
Your own businessProduct names, service names, industry terms
User researchOriginal phrases from customer service logs, community questions, survey responses
Competitor websitesCheck which keywords competitors rank for and what content they’ve created
Search engineBaidu drop-down suggestions, related searches, “ people are also asking ”
Industry communitiesPopular Zhihu questions, frequent topics on Tieba

The goal of this step is 'broad and extensive'—don’t filter yet. Collect 50–200 seed keywords.

Step 3: Expand and quantify using tools

Enter the seed keywords into professional tools to obtain data such as search volume, competition level, and related long-tail keywords.

Recommended tool combination:

Step 4: Categorization and grouping

  • Informational : Users want to learn about knowledge (e.g., "What is GEO"、“What is organic traffic”)→ Corresponds to on-site what-is-geo/、what-is-organic-marketing/ Ces pages de questions-réponses
  • Research-oriented : users comparing decisions (e.g., "SEO vs GEO", “What is the difference between AEO and GEO”) → corresponding ai-summary-vs-traditional-ranking/、what-is-geo/ these comparison questions

Prioritize by business priority:

  1. Core keywords(directly related to conversion) → prioritize using homepage/product page for traffic capture
  2. Secondary keywords(indirectly related) → use category pages, topic pages for traffic capture
  3. Long-tail keywords(traffic supplement) → cover one by one with blog posts

Step 5: Evaluate difficulty, determine priority

Not all keywords are worth immediate action. Assess using three metrics:

KPIHow to determine
Search volumewhether monthly search volume justifies content investment cost
Competition difficultydomain authority and content quality of top 10 results
Corrélation avec les objectifs métierwhether traffic from this keyword can convert

Prioritize: search volume moderate + low competition + high business relevance. These are often long-tail or niche-scenario keywords.

Step 6: Implement into content plan

The goal of keyword research is not just an Excel sheet, but aexecutable content schedule:

  1. each target keyword corresponds to one or more pieces of content
  2. clearly define the type of landing page (homepage/category page/article page) for each piece
  3. set publish date and priority
  4. planinternal linkrelationships (which articles link to each other, which point to core pages)

a real-world example: how songbing.com.cn did it

Taking songbing.com.cn as an example, it conducts keyword research on the theme of "Chinese organic marketing" with the following approach:

This is the full application of the "6-step process" described earlier on a real website: seed keywords expanded into 101 question-based keywords → each question corresponds to one Q&A post → organized by chapter → index page aggregation. You can also see that every article title in the site is itself a keyword (e.g., "What is GEO?", "Correct Use of Content Duplication and Canonical Tags").

Advanced addition: a practical 3-step keyword library building + 4-tier demand segmentation method

The following methodology comes from a real-world breakdown in the author's official account, more "engineering-oriented" than the general flow above, especially suitable for content sites starting from scratch to build a keyword library:

3-step keyword library building:

  1. Expand keywords across multiple channels (start with 500+): use Baidu Index to track trends, 5118 to uncover long-tail keywords, site owner tools to check industry terms; analyze traffic keywords from top 3 competitors; scrape frequent user questions fromZhihu/tieba to supplement "user-generated queries"-type needs
  2. Data cleaning : Remove low-volume keywords with monthly search volume below 50, high-competition keywords already dominated by major sites on the first page, and irrelevant keywords; retain 300–400 effective keywords that are easy to rank and have high conversion potential

4-tier demand segmentation (corresponding to 4 types of pages, using songbing.com.cn as an example):

TierUser profileKeyword examplesTargeting pageOptimization focus
Cognitive tierInformation seeking“What is organic marketing”, “What is GEO”Q&A page (e.g. /100wen/what-is-geo/)One-sentence definition + structured content
Consideration tierComparative analysis“What’s the difference between SEO and GEO”, “What is AEO”Comparison Q&A page (e.g. /100wen/ai-summary-vs-traditional-ranking/)Table comparison + pain point resolution
Decision tierClear action“How to get AI to recommend my brand”, “How to rank on Xiaohongshu search”Step-by-step tutorial page (e.g. /100wen/get-ai-to-recommend-your-brand/)Practical steps + copyable checklist
Repurchase tierExisting user expansion“How to handle content duplication”, “How to use Canonical tags”Advanced topic page (e.g. /100wen/canonical-tag-deduplication/)Deep dive + related recommendations
